All About Kullu Manali

Manali, (alt. 1,950 m or 6,398 ft) on the Beas River Valley, is an important hill station in the Himalayan mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India, near the northern end of the Kullu Valley. It is administratively a part of the Kullu District. The population is approx. 30,000.

There are actually two parts of Manali. Aleo New-Manali town is on the banks of the Beas river and the Old Manali village lies east of the Manalsu nullah, which in its present form, is more of a hippy enclave.
The small town was the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and, from there, over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.
The ancient cave temple, Hidimba Devi Temple, is not far from town.

Manali is located at 32.16° N 77.10° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 2625 metres (8612 feet).

Origin of Name

Manali is named after the Hindu lawgiver Manu. The word Manali literally means “the abode of Manu”. Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood had deluged the world. The Old Manali village has an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu.

History

The towns of Kullu and Manali are dotted on the scenic Beas river valley. In a stretch of 100 km, Beas is joined by scores of tributatiries or "nallahs" which are known to cause flooding during the monsoon season. It is precisely because of its everflowing snow fed waters, Manali is so fertile.
This has meant that over a period of time there has been a constant flow of inhabitants into the valley. However the culture and diaspora has remained symbolic to the region.

The earliest history can be tracked down in the folk-lore of Mahabharatha, but more importantly in the local folk-lore which is not very well documented.

The valley was sparesely populated in ancient times and its inhabitants were known as literally "rakshas", the non agricultural hunting and wandering communities. The next arrivals were the shephards which came in through the Kangra valley and settled to take up agriculture.

Some of the earliest and the most indigenous inhabitants of the regios are the 'naur' or 'nar' which is a caste unique to Kullu. Only a few naur families are known to exist now. A naur family in the village Soyal near Haripur on the left bank of Manali was famous for the vast land they owned and their practice of having 'rakshas' as their labourers.

Britisher officers were the first documented visitors to the valley. Some books written by travellers have the earliest pictures of Manali dating as far back as 1920. The British were also responsible for bringing in cash crops like apple and fish like trout which was not native to Manali. It is said that when apple trees were first planted the fruits were so plentiful that often branches, unable to bear the weight would collapse. To this day apple along with plum and pear remains the best source of income for the majority of its inhabitants.

However, tourism in Manali received a real fillip after the rise of militancy in
Kashmir in late 1980s. This once quite village has now been transformed into a bustling town with hundreds of hotels and restaurants that have mushroomed all over Manali to serve the ever increasing influx of tourists.

Transport

Mall street, Manali
Manali is well connected by road to Delhi through NH-21 which goes on the Leh and is the world's highest motorable road. Leading up to Manali from
New Delhi are the towns of Panipat and Ambala in Haryana, Chandigarh(Union Territory), Ropar in Punjab, and Bilaspur, Sundernagar, and Mandi in Himachal.
Manali is not easily approachable by rail. The nearest
broad gauge railheads are at Chandigarh (315 km.), Pathankot (325 km.) and Kalka (310 km.). The nearest narrow gauge railhead is at Joginder Nagar (135 km.)

The nearest airport is at
Bhuntar, which is about 50 km. from Manali.

Tourist Attractions:

1) Manali's charas is considered to be the best in India

2) Manali offers hot springs, spectacular religious shrines and temples, Tibetan Buddhist temples, and trekking in the surrounding mountains.

3) Dhungri or Hadimba Temple

4) Manali is known for its shiny gompas or Buddhist monasteries-Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa, built in 1969.

5) Ruined fort here by the name of Manaligarh

6) Manu Maharishi Temple, dedicated to sage Manu.

7) Vaishisht, around 3 km from Manali, also boasts a pair of old stone temples

8) Rohtang Pass, at an altitude of 13,050 feet above sea level- But, is closed in winter.

9) Small lake called Dassaur Lake. Beas Kund, the source of river Beas

10) Solang Valley, popularly known as Snow Point, is 13 km northwest of Manali and famous for its 300-meter ski

11) Jagatsukh, the former capital of Manali, is also an important spot.

Adventure Sports

Skiing is a major pastime in Manali. Facilities for skiing are available at Solang Nullah (January-March) and Rohtang La (during summer). The Mountaineering Institute at Solang Nullah is a good training institute. Heli skiing is possible at the deep snowfields.
The Mountaineering Institute and Allied Sports is about 3 km from the Mall and offers mountaineering and kayaking courses. Kayaking is possible on the Beas River.
There are several good hikes from Manali. The 12 km hike up the western banks of the Beas to the Solang Valley is noteworthy. Lama Dugh meadow is a 6 km hike up to the Manalsu Nala, west of Manali town.

For the best trekking expedition, take a trek from Solang Valley, on to Dhundhi and from there to Dussar lake and then onwards to Manali. This stretch will take you to places you would have only dreamt of. Pure, unadulterated adventure and fun. Be sure to have a good guide at your disposal who knows this area otherwise you would be lost forever. The trek would typically last for 5 days.

In the summers, several travel agencies organize paragliding on the slopes of the Solang Nullah. The charges generally include accommodation, food, equipment, and a guide, but not transport.
From May to July and, depending on the monsoons, from mid-September to mid-October, some basic rafting is possible on the Beas. The trips generally begin at Pirdi and continue 16 km down to Jhiri.
The HPTDC provides day permits for fishing. Permits can be obtained also at Patlikhul. Angling in the Kullu valley is possible at Larji, Katrain and Kasol
.

Sports

Manali is among the most popular adventure sports destinations in India. Manali offers opportunities for mountaineering, skiing, trekking, paragliding, white water rafting, and mountain biking. Yak skiing is a sport unique to this area. Manali also featured in Time magazine's "Best of Asia" for its "Extreme Yak Sports.

All About Shimla; Hotels in Shimla

Shimla pronunciation (Hindi: शिमला, Urdu: شملہ)

The summer capital of the erstwhile British Raj in India, is a city and a minicipal corporation in Shimla district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is nestled in the middle Himalayas in northern India. Riding on the memories of its glorious past under the British, who built the town and named it Simla, it is now the capital of Himachal Pradesh .

It is also a popular hill station of India, where tourists flock during summers to enjoy the temperate climate and during winters to enjoy the snow.
Shimla is etched in history of Indo-Pakistan relations as it was witness to the Shimla Agreement signed by the two nations following Pakistan's surrender in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Shimla district is located in the middle western ranges of the Himalayas. This region has a hilly terrain and has an uneven cover of evergreen pine forests. The Shimla city spreads over the hill at an average altitude of 2000 meters (roughly 6500 feet) above mena sea level.

Transport
Shimla is accessible by road, air and railway but road is perhaps the best means of transport.

Road
The nearest large city is Chandigarh, 115 km on National Highway no 22. Other cities near Shimla are Solan (55 km) and Panchkula (100 km). New Delhi is 365 km away. There are Volvo (Super-Deluxe) buses, operated by State owned roadways, that run between Delhi and Shimla via Chandigarh. It takes about 7-8 hours to complete the journey in these buses.

Railway
The narrow gauge
Kalka Shimla Railway connects Shimla to the main railway network at Kalka. Travel by rail is slow but the scenery and 103 tunnels en route make it a tourist attraction. Shivalik Express (deluxe train with facilities like Shatabdi Express) runs daily on this route.

Air
There is a small airport about 25km from the city at Jubbalhatti. A private airline operates weekly flights to Delhi.

Hotels in Mussoorie

The Queen of Hill stations

Mussoorie is located amidst the middle Himalayas known as the 'Shivalik' mountain range in Northern India. There is a whole lot that I can write about this place but the nostalgia is almost overwhelming.

Mussoorie always remained unofficial - for the affairs of heart. It has always been a gossipy place - with an air of informality and a tradition of romance - The Honeymoon capital of India.

Mussorie has a beautiful nature walk known as "Camel's Back Road". This road takes its name from mountain outcrop in the shape of a camel's hump. There is also "Gun Hill" where cannons were kept for the defence of Mussorie. The oldest Christian church in the Himalayas, St Mary's, is situated above Mall Road, and is currently undergoing restoration. A Cable car goes to the top of Gun Hill from the town centre. Kempty falls is a nice picnic spot. Lal Tibba is another tourist spot of Mussoorie.

Beautiful Dhanaulti is about 24 kilometers from Mussorie.
Rialto and Picture Palace were two nice movie theatres, however they are now closed.
Parking in Mussorie is a big problem. The Road leading to Landour from the Picture Palace has parking spots on both sides. Mall road does not allow entry of motored vehicles till after 10 in the night.

Mussoorie also had India's largest roller skating rink.

Below You can find the roadmap for Delhi- Mussoorie

About Mussoorie

Mussoorie is a hill station situated in the foothills of the Himalaya ranges in north Indian state of Uttaranchal. It is also known as the "Queen of the Hills". The adjoining town of Landour, which includes a military cantonment, is considered part of 'greater Mussoorie', as are the townships of Barlowganj and Jharipani.
Being at an average
altitude of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft.), Mussoorie, with its green hills and varied flora and fauna, is a fascinating hill resort. Commanding snow ranges to the north-east, and glittering views of the Doon Valley and Shiwalik ranges in the south, the town was once said to present a 'fairyland' atmosphere to tourists.
The best time to visit is from mid-March to mid-November though the downpours could be an inhibiting factor in the monsoon months of July to September.

Its history dates back to 1825 when Captain Young, an adventurous British military officer, together with a Mr. Shore, the resident Superintendent of Revenues at Dehradun explored the present site and jointly constructed a shooting lodge. This laid the foundation of this holiday resort which now has few rivals. Mussoorie is famous for its scenic beauty and hectic social life. It provides all kinds of amusement and every facility for domestic and foreign tourists.

Its name is derived from a shrub locally called 'MANSOOR' behind the house of the Captain. Some believe that perhaps that is reason behind the name of the town, which is also known as MANSOORI among the natives of the surrounding area.
Now, Mussoorie suffers from over-development of hotels and tourist lodges, given its relative proximity to Delhi, Ambala and Chandigarh, and has serious problems of garbage collection, water scarcity and parking shortages, especially during the summer tourist season. Landour, Jharipani and Barlowganj have fewer such problems.

The main promenade in Mussoorie is called, as in other hill stations, the Mall. In Mussoorie, the Mall stretches from Picture Palace at its eastern end to the Public Library (shortened to 'Library') at its western end. During the British Raj, signs on the Mall expressly stated: "Indians and Dogs Not Allowed"; racist signs of this type were commonplace in hill stations, which were founded 'by and for' the British. Motilal Nehru, the father of Jawahar Lal Nehru, deliberately broke this rule every day whenever he was in Mussoorie, and would pay the fine. The Nehru family, including Nehrus's daughter Indira (later Indira Gandhi) were frequent visitors to Mussoorie in the the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. They also spent much time in nearby Dehradun, where Nehru's sister Vijayalakshmi Pandit ultimately settled full-time.

Mussoorie is conveniently connected by road to Delhi and major cities. It is called the "Gateway" to Yamunotri and Gangotri Shrines of Northern India. The closest rail station is Dehradun. Taxis are easily available for Mussorie as are buses at regular intervals.
Mussorie also has the Lal Bahadur Sastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), the honing ground for young bureaucrats of India, who carry the destiny of India. This picturesque institute is located about 7kms away from the Mall Road.

Nainital (29° 24' N, 79° 28' E)

Is a town in the Indian state of Uttaranchal and headquarters of Nainital District in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalaya. Situated at an altitude of 1938 m (6,350 ft) above sea-level, Nainital is set in a valley containing a pear-shaped lake, approximately 2 miles in circumference, and surrounded by mountains, of which the highest are Naina (2615 m) on the north, Deopatha (2438 m) on the west, and Ayarpatha (2278 m) on the south. From the tops of the higher peaks, "magnificent views can be obtained of the vast plain to the south, or of the mass of tangled ridges lying north, bounded by the great snowy range which forms the central axis of the Himalayas."[1]

Nainital has temperate summers (maximum temperature 27°C, or 80°F; minimum temperature 10°C, or 50°F) during which its population increases more than five fold with an annual influx of tourists predominantly from the plains of Northern India. In the winter, Nainital receives snowfall between December and February with the temperatures varying between a maximum of 15°C (59°F) and a minimum of -3°C (26°F).
